March 22 is World Water Day

On March 22, the world celebrates World Water Day. The theme of the day for 2023 is dedicated to accelerating change to address the water supply and sanitation crisis. Water supply disruptions undermine progress in all sectors.

In 2015, the world committed to achieving 6 sustainable development goals within the framework of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, according to which everyone will have access to safe water and sanitation by 2030.

The UN states that at this moment we have seriously deviated from the course.

1.4 million people worldwide die annually due to poor water quality, sanitation and hygiene. Around 2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water. Almost half of the world's population, 3.6 billion people, do not have safe sanitary conditions. 44 percent of domestic wastewater is not treated safely.

According to forecasts, the global demand for water will increase by 55 percent by 2050.

The demand for safe water in Armenia remains unsatisfied. The main reservoirs of Akhuryan, Aparan, Arpilich, Azat, Marmarik are 40 percent full, which is an alarm considering the rainy season. Lake Sevan has a negative balance. In the Ararat artesian basin, the water horizons have gone down, the processes of desertification have deepened.
