Environmental Security in Gender Context: Meeting at UN House in Brussels

On April 17, 2024, a discussion on "Environmental Security in the South Caucasus and Moldova" was held at the UN house in Brussels within the framework of  EU4Dialogue program, where female representatives of political society from Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Moldova participated. Kristina Ter-Matevosyan, a journalist at "EcoLur" Informational NGO, also participated in this discussion.

The purpose of the discussion was to examine the gender-differentiated impact of climate change and consider the best options for implementing gender-sensitive programs in the field of environmental security. In particular, the issue of the impact of environmental crises from a gender perspective was discussed, the need for gender-sensitive approaches were emphasized, which will ensure the participation of women in the development of climate policies and analyses.

Kristina Ter-Matevosyan noted, "Our studies show that women are often not involved in the decision-making processes that are important to them, including the implementation of energy and climate programs."

Kristina Ter-Matevosyan also presented the data on greenhouse gas emissions in Armenia, the share of energy in it.

Referring to the prospects of renewable energy development in Armenia, she pointed out that solar energy has been developing over the recent years.

Speaking about the risks of solar photovoltaic plants, Kristina Ter-Matevosyan referred to the problems of storing and processing photovoltaic panels in case of damage or after operation.
