The mountain village of Vahagni nestled in the forests is in Pambak consolidated community, Lori Region.
"The name of Vahagni came from the fact that, according to a myth, the temple of the god Vahagn was located in the village," Suren Vardumyan, Administrative Head of Vahagni, noted.
People here are mainly engaged in farming, animal husbandry and beekeeping. In recent years, there has been a decline in bee colonies, which, according to the villagers, was contributed to by the heavy spring rains.
Agriculture in Vahagni developed in recent years, when agricultural machinery entered the field.
"For about 20 years, people have not cultivated the land, but in the last three years there has been a tendency to cultivate the land," Suren Vardumyan outlined.
Climate change is also felt in Vahagni. Over the years, an increase in temperature is observed, which, according to the villagers, is one of the reasons for the poor growth of barley. Due to the frosts of recent years, the yield of walnuts fell, instead figs started growing in the village. This year, the hail that fell in June caused a lot of damage to the farmers.
Agriculture is practiced in Vahagni without an irrigation system. They want to use the water flowing from the mountains for irrigation purposes and for this they see the need to build a geomembrane reservoir. It has already been estimated that 106 million AMD are needed for the construction of such a reservoir.
Despite being gasified, houses in Vahagni are mostly heated with firewood in winter. Year by year, the amount of free space is reduced. They are thinking about an alternative to reduce the pressure on the forest.
Vahagni settlement has potential for tourism development. "National trails" pass through the territory of our settlement. It is planned that 10,000 tourists should pass through that trail every year. It is a very serious incentive for the development of tourism in our settlement," Suren Vardumyan noted.
In Vahagni, they are proud that Anton Qochinyan, Chair of the Council of Ministers of the Armenian SSR, and Gusan Zakaryan, an honored figure of Armenian culture, were born in their village.
Their busts are in the yard of Vahagni school.
