Gavar consolidated community in Gegharkunik region, Armenia, has been expanded with new green areas. Tree planting was carried out in the yards of Gavar State Agricultural College, Gandzak and Karmir Gyugh schools. These green areas will prevent the pollution of the Gavar River and Lake Sevan from the community's scattered agricultural and municipal wastewater.
The initiative belongs to "Environment and Health" NGO which was supported by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Armenia. "The implementation of environmental programs in Armenia is part of the embassy's activities," Petr Pirunčík, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Czech Republic to Armenia, outlined in his interview with EcoLur.
"Tree planting is a nature-based solution to improve the state of the environment. It also serves an eco-educational function by involving youth and schoolchildren," said Petr Pirunchik.
In his interview with EcoLur, Liana Margaryan, President of "Environment and Health" NGO mentioned that 120 trees and shrubs have been planted in the yard of Gavar State Agricultural College, and 40 more trees are being added to the 100 already planted in the yards of Gandzak and Karmirgyugh schools. Birch, maple, thujas, yellow acacia, barberry, and cypress have been planted.
"These trees will absorb the nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil through their roots for their growth, thereby helping to prevent the entry of nitrogen and phosphorus from rainwater and surface runoff into the Gavaraget and then Lake Sevan. This solution is widely used in international practice, and in Armenia, we are implementing it for the first time using the example of Gavar consolidated community," Liana Margaryan outlined.
