We present an analytical work by climate expert and Nobel laureate, Alexey Kokorin, a member of the CAN EECCA international climate network, dedicated to the COP29 climate conference, which will take place in Baku from November 11 to 22, 2024.
In his analysis, Kokorin addresses the key challenges and anticipated outcomes for COP29. The conference will gather world leaders, policymakers, and environmental advocates to discuss global climate policies, review national climate action plans, and assess countries' commitments to the Paris Agreement. Given the context, Kokorin highlights Azerbaijan’s significant reliance on oil and gas industries and evaluates how this impacts its climate policy, which has been criticized by international communities for lack of tangible actions toward greenhouse gas reductions.
The conference will also focus on advancing the implementation of climate adaptation measures, financing for developing countries, and stronger commitments to reduce fossil fuel dependency. Furthermore, the international community’s choice of Baku as the host city has drawn some criticism due to concerns about human rights and environmental policies in the region, a topic addressed in Kokorin's work.
