On 25 December a meeting was held with the public at State Committee on Water Industry of Territorial Administration Ministry on the increase in water outlets from Lake Sevan making it from 170 million cubic meters to 240 million cubic meters for duration of five years. This proposal is being drawn up for the approval of the government and its further consideration by the National Assembly of Armenia for making amendments and supplements to RA Law “On Approving state complex program on the recovery, preservation, reproduction and natural development and usage of Lake Sevan ecosystem”.
Reminder: the Committee substantiates this proposal as follows: the Sev Jur River, which irrigates the land areas in Ararat Valley is deprived, ground and artesian waters, the underground waters in Ararat Valley, which is a complex system as such, are over-exhausted. “We can even say that Ararat Valley is in disastrous situation and we should take measures to save it,” said Deputy Nature protection Minister Simon Papyan. He didn’t want to say names; he only noted that the fish farms, which had dug the illegal well, are not being checked, while the illegal wells are being liquidated. Ararat Valley has a total of 800 million cubic meters of recoverable reserves of ground and artesian waters, which 234 fish farms use through 450 deep wells. All the public representatives taking part in this meeting expressed their categorical disagreement with the program.
