If Energy Safety Ensuring Concept Comes True, Armenia Will Significantly Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

“The use of certain energy resources causes significant greenhouse gas emissions into atmosphere, which can lead to irreversible consequences of climate change, and the negative consequences are already obvious. This factor is taken into consideration by the Government of Armenia, particularly when developing strategic programs”, Daniel Stepanyan, Head of Devision of Developing Renewable Energy,  RA Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, stated at the  round table entitled “Discussing Ways to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions Under Light of Energy Safety” held at EcoLur Press Club on May 4, 2015.

He presented energy safety concept, which lays down the use, import and production of such energy carriers, which don’t emit greenhouse gases into atmosphere. Particularly the developments mainly refer to nuclear energy, energy efficiency, production of energy carriers and diversified ways of supply.

The provisions of the concept paper show that 20% of all the energy consumed in the Republic of Armenia and 10% of all the energy used in transportation shall be energy carriers produced with the use of energy carriers by 2020.

SHPPs produce insignificant part of total energy. We have mastered sufficient potential for SHPPs, and we have already issued proper licenses for stations with 100-120 MW installed capacity. If these SHPPs are constructed, it will ensure the implementation of the strategy of the Government of Armenia in the sector of SHPPs.

In the field of wind energy, wind stations with installed capacity of 200 MW shall be constructed by 2025.

It’s planned to construct “Lori Berd” HPP with 66 MW and “Shnogh” HPP with 75 MW installed capacity. We will also develop geothermal and solar energy: around US$ 9 million grant funds will be provided for the geological prospecting of Karkar geothermal area through drilling, as well as for economic and technical feasibility assessment and etc. Around 2 million grant funds will be provided for the monitoring of solar energy, which will be followed by US$ 26 million from the Climate Investment Fund and complemented from other sources to construct these stations.”
