RPA Hasn’t Conceded Position of Nature Protection Minister to Anyone in 2007

EcoLur

EcoLur presents the first issue of “Monitoring Environmental Programs of Political Parties” series. This material is dedicated to the environmental component of the Republican Party of Armenia.

After the victory in the elections for 2007, the Republican Party of Armenia hasn’t conceded the position of Nature Protection Minister to anyone thus undertaking political responsibility for the environment and natural resources preservation. Meanwhile, the environmental part of RPA program is rather poor and includes only 4 priorities, one of them is “the implementation of the program on improving the ecological state in Yerevan and other large towns.” For us, Yerevan residents, this means preserving the green zones in the city, improving the state of public territories, easy breathing, our children playing in public parks, gardens and green yards, preserving water ecosystem of Yerevan and mitigating semi-desert climate of our country.

Presenting the brief chronicle, we appeal Nature Protection Minister to responsibility together with Yerevan Mayor.

Brief chronicle:  Mashtots park – green zone given to boutiques. Student Park – capital objects constructed in the green zone. Komitas Park – illegal construction of Nemo Dolphinarium. Urban freeway construction project through Dalma Gardens. The construction of a restaurant in the park on Surenyants Street. Illegal construction of a multi-storey house at 106/1 Nalbandyan St. Tree felling at 62 Teryan for construction purposes. Tree felling at 28 Isahakyan for construction purposes. Illegal construction in Malatiya-Sebastiya quarter – no exact address mentioned, just photos sent. Illegal tree felling at 60 Komitas Avenue (the inspection couldn’t carry full-fledged examinations on the spot belonging to National Assembly RPA Deputy Samvel Aleksanyan’s wife.)

It should be mentioned that around 20,000 signatures had been collected against the illegal site development in Student Park. Despite that, the construction works were not stopped. The actions of civil disobedience are still in progress in Mashtots Park, which have been lasting for more than 2 months.

On this background the positive result should also be recorded, where civic societies should be “blamed”, but not accountable officials, for example, Park of Dragons for which people have been fighting for several months and finally the construction of a multi-storey building was stopped.
