Environmental Public Alliance has applied to National Assembly Speaker Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan and Mr. Samvel Balasanyan, Chairman of National Assembly Standing Committee on Agriculture and Nature Protection to annul the discussion of Lake Sevan at the meeting of National Assembly on 20 June. The application letter says, “On 20 June tge agenda of Standing Committee on Agriculture and Nature Protection includes the item of discussion the governmental bill on water outlet from Lake Sevan in the amount of 320 million square meters.”
Active public, environmental NGOs, 20 NGOs from Gegharkounik region, community representatives oppose to the water outlets from Lake Sevan in the amount of 320 million square meters and consider it as non-substantiated and have already addressed compliant-letters to the National Assembly. Besides, the National Assembly turned down the proposal of public participation in the discussion of this issue on 20 June.
The bill has been adopted with the violation of Armenian Constitution, Aarhus Convention and Armenian laws, meanwhile the participation of professionals to the committee discussion has been hindered.
All the makes us doubtful about the lawfulness of this bill, thus violating democracy principles and right to public participation in environmental matters.
We would like to present the National Assembly hundreds of signatures from bill-affected communities in Lake Sevan area, who express their non-consent with the aforementioned bill.
Taking into consideration the importance of Lake Sevan and its strategic and vital significance for the sustainable development of Armenia and Armenian people
WE DEMAND
To annul the discussion appointed today, 20 June, and to appoint another expanded discussion enabling all stakeholders to participate.
