Demanding to Recognize Parliamentary Amendments in RA Law “On Lake Law” Null and Void

Environmental Public Alliance

Statement of Environmental Public Alliance

On 20 June 2012 Environmental Public Alliance has applied to National Assembly Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan, Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Environmental Issues Samvel Balasanyan on public participation in the discussion regarding additional water outlets from Lake Sevan. Nevertheless, this proposal was turned down. The project was accepted in the violation of Armenian constitution, Aarhus convention and environmental legislation of Armenia.

Democratic principles and public rights in decision-making are violated in Armenia. In this regard, the Alliance has applied to Human Rights Defender of Armenia. The discussion of the problem was organized, afterwards Ombudsman Karen Andreasyan made a statement, where the violations of the legislation as regards with public participation were observed. Taking into consideration the exceptional strategic significance of Lake Sevan, Environmental Public Alliance demands to recognize the parliamentary amendments in RA Law “On Lake Sevan” null and void and to organize expanded public hearings in this regard.
