Unprecedented amount of water has been let out of Lake Sevan. On August 30, the Armenian Government approved the draft decision submitted by Andranik Andreasyan, Chairman of the State Committee for Water Industry by the Ministry of Territorial Administration, under which the volume of water outlets from Lake Sevan will reach an unprecedented indicator, 319.2 million square meters. The aim is to ensure continuous irrigation to Ararat Valley.
Thus, the Armenian Government didn’t take into consideration the conclusion of the Expert Committee of Lake Sevam Preservation, which offered to limit water outlets by 280 million square meters.
Reminder: RA Law “On approving Annual Complex Programs for Recovery, Preservation, Reproduction and Usage of Lake Sevan” permit maximum amount of 170 millions square meters of water from Lake Sevan, however, on 22 June 2012 the newly elected National Assembly adopted amendments to the aforementioned law in two readings and laid down the amount of water outlets for 2012 from Lake Sevan in the amount of 320 million square meters. In 2008 water outlets from Lake Sevan also exceeded the set amount, but this time the Armenian Government was satisfied only with 303 million square meters.
