The scientists working at Institute of Botany think that the tree felling currently carried out in Botanical Garden are expedient and needed. Member of Public Environmental Alliance, Dr. Biological Sciences, Marina Oganezova disseminated a statement via the network of the alliance, which particularly says, “The garden long needs renovation, but there weren’t sufficient funds for this purpose. The administration found people, who agreed to clean the section.” Chairman of Botanical Society of Armenia, Professor Eleonora Gabrielyan said, “These are fast-growing poplars, which were planted as experimental plantations. They have short life duration, as these poplars have lived their lives and now they are getting dry. It’s much expedient to replace them with a new collection.  Now the issue of using this section for other purpose is being discussed. ” She thinks that the attitude towards preservation of green zones in the town should be changed. “Disgraceful practices occur in Yerevan. We make such trees “younger”, which don’t need any rejuvenation, for example, sycamore. It lives thousand years, what kind of rejuvenation can we speak about? When a sycamore or any other coniferous tree is cut down its top, they stop growing. But this, at least unscientific and unwise attitude turned out to be catching and they are used even where it is counter-indicated, for example, in the northern regions of Armenia. Or to take fast-growing poplars as an example. This sort has especially been grown to get timber quickly. They need much water, otherwise get dry. It means we should have a program, which takes into consideration all these factors. Special sorts are needed for greening. At present, fine-leaved elm grows everywhere I Yerevan, which a good place for greenfly and other pests to grow. They fall off and don’t perform their function of greening, while sycamores are not used, though we have a plantation of planting stock in Syunik,” Professor Gabrielyan said.
