EcoLur presents “Two Hours before Public Hearings on Cyanic Plant in Meghradzor” video report. The report presents Meghradzor Village Head’s opinion, where the public hearings in the construction project of a cyanic plant were held on 5 December. The project had been submitted by “Meghradzor Gold” Company developing Meghradzor gold mine. The company obtained the assets of the mine and ore processing plant – crushing and sorting plant one year ago from Russian “GeoProMining Gold” Company.
According to the agreement with “GeoProMining Gold” Company, “Meghradzor Gold” transfers ore to Ararat gold extraction plant, where Dore bas is obtained. Now “Meghradzor Gold” intends to become independent and to build its own gold extraction plant.
Before the start of the hearings, we asked Meghradzor Village Head Karlen Hovhannisyan to answer to several questions: 1) how he assessed the environmental situation in Meghradzor in terms of opencast gold mining and related risks, 2) whether he is acquainted with the construction project of cyanic plant in Meghradzor and what’s his opinion about this project.
Meghradzor Village Head Karlen Hovhannisyan: ...I didn’t hear that gold mining has some kind of impact on people. I got acquainted with the project 10 days ago, this is a specialized product. I’m not a specialist. When we received the announcement about the public hearings, several villagers came near to me...they were interested and intended to take part in it. We will decide whether or not there is any sense to construct such a plant in the village. They should tell us about harmful substances to be used, which pollute air, how they should be used and how to be removed.”
Already at the beginning of the hearings the mood of Meghradzor villagers was bellicose. To be continued in the next report.
