“Trchkan” civic initiative is concerned that the negotiations between Armenia and Iran on leasing agricultural land areas in Syunik Region to Iranian Province - East Azerbaijan are run in closed settings. The activists have applied to Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Territorial Administration Armen Gevorgyan and Agriculture Minister Sergo Karapetyan with a request not to make hasty decisions without public discussions.
The essence of the proposed agreement between Armenia and Iran is that the pastures of Syunik Region are leased to the Iranian Province - East Azerbaijan for a term of 5 years for pasture of 5 thousand heads of cattle. In exchange, the Iranian party promises to provide agricultural machinery produced in the same province. A meat-and-dairy combine and a center for producing mixed fodder are proposed to construct in Sisian with the joint participation of Iranian and Armenian businessmen. “We call for refraining from any decision concerning the territory of the Republic of Armenia without informing people and taking into consideration public opinion,” the statement says.
