For the first time in recent years Lake Sevan has a negative balance. The annual balance is determined as of 1 January. The level of Lake Sevan, as of 1 January 2012, made up 1900,13 m, while as of 1 January 2013 its level decreased to 1900,10 m. The main reason is water outlets from the lake in the volume of 317 million cubic meters, which exceeded the limit standards from Lake Sevan – 170 million cubic meters, but it was legalized by the Armenian parliament. According to our information, the committee on Lake Sevan Problems by the President of Armenia has already sent the information on negative balance to the president. At the same time Nature Protection Minister Aram Harutyunyan in his report displayed on the official website of the ministry, mentioned the preservation of the positive balance of Lake Sevan as an achievement. “...In 2012 the level of Lake Sevan rose to 1900,11 m, but it didn’t incur a negative balance as a result of water outlets in the volume of 317 million cubic meters...” the report says.
