Presidential Election Race in Armenia Launched with Candidate’s Hunger Strike

Today, 0n 21 January, the presidential election race has been launched in Armenia. And at once, one of the candidates for the position of the president, the activist of ‘green’ public movement and group member of ‘dismantlers’ in Mashtots Park Andreas Ghukasyan announced about hunger strike without any time limits. The protest demonstration takes place on Baghramyan Avenue, not fat from the Armenian President’s seat.

In reply to EcoLur’s question about the reason for a hunger strike, Andreas Ghukasyan replied, “After the fight for Mashtots Park, a big discussion started what to do further. For example, to set up a structure, which would protect public and environmental rights of people. And in fact, something has been done and is done. While there is another viewpoint is it doesn’t matter how much you fight with the consequences of the disease, if the cause is not treated, no result will be achieved. And the whole life you will have to fight either here or there. I think we should do both. By going into politics we will seek to find a solution to the problem in the political arena.'
EcoLur: Is your protest demonstration a part of the election campaign?

Andreas Ghukasyan: There is a significant difference between a campaign and protest. The campaign supposes there are people granted with a right to elect freely. In the pre-election period, a candidate presents its program and team, while people elect him. But if there diktat, which dictates who to vote for, no free elections can be… While public logic dictates to put forward such demands, so as the party in power was taken out of the pre-election fight.
EcoLur: In your opinion, which environmental problems need urgent solutions?

Andreas Ghukasyan: My program includes a part dedicated to economy. The main principle is that the soils of our country belonged not only to those people, who live today, but also to future generations. We have no moral right to leave a shelter after us. Only barbaric people can act in this way, who have no moral beliefs. Everything extracted from the ground shouldn’t be exported out of the country. In my opinion, this should be the main principle. But now another choice is made, which is unacceptable for us.
