How We Compensate Our Debt to Sevan?

EcoLur

Still in 2009 Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said during his visit to Gegharkounik region, 'We owe a debt towards Sevan. We should return Sevan whatever we have taken from Sevan beginning from the Soviet period. We should return to Sevan its health and these words are not just nice words. This is our obligation and we should pay off our debt with the expectation that Sevan will continue serving to our people and generations.' EcoLur tries to learn from Gegharkounik Regional Administration Environmental Department Head Hambardzum Hambardzumyan how the debt of Sevan has been paid off so far.

'I can clearly remember that the President has made such a statement that we have continuously taken from Sevan and haven't returned anything, we should pay off our debt. I was very happy with this statement. I personally live here and work, and I can see much work has been carried out, which results are not obvious immediately. Today it's obvious that the lake water level has been increased by over 2.5 meters. The works connected with shore cleaning can be shown. In many cases customers are, to some extent, not happy with the quality of works done, but in regard with scales, I can see large-scale works have been carried out. Wide-scale works have been carried out in water supply and water drainage. I think it costs 15.5 million Euros. Water supply and water drainage wroks in Vardenis, Martuni, Gavar, Sevan and Jermuk towns are on progress, most of them has been accomplished, still I don’t know why the cleaning station operate, there are some technical problems, but very soon they will start operating and we will definitely eye witness the differences.'

EcoLur: What are results for fish reserve recovery?

“I have my concrete opinion in regard with the recovery of fish reserves, which is different from those of many specialists. It’s true that the works of fish reserve recovery and complementing are carried out. About 366 thousand young fish, worth about 60 million AMD, is let out into the lake every year and this year as well. I can corroborate as a participant, this process has been much better in the recent years. The person who they buy the fish from is a very interesting person. When we fill into the trucks the whole young fish we bought, every time he added a certain amount of young fish, let’s say 5 or 3 kg, i.e. several thousands of young fish, and said it’s his gift to Sevan. That’s the whole amount of fish bought is let out into the lake. The other issue is where the young fish is let out, where it will adapt better, how much it will grow, these are other issues. Protection after letting out is another issue. I think if we organize fish recovery program, we should also organize fish protection program in the lake,” Hambardzum Hambardzumyan said.
