The AOKS building of the Armenian Association for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries won’t be destroyed. Today this statement was made by Karo Ayvazyan, Yerevan Territorial Division Head of Preservation and Usage of Monuments and Historical Environment of RA Culture Ministry. The reason for the protest demonstration is the construction of a 10-storey hotel complex by “Local Developers” LLC at 14 Pushkin St. next the historical and cultural monuments projected by “Narek Sargsyan Architecture Studio” LLC. Though Yerevan Municipality has permitted the construction of the hotel, the project hasn’t been discussed at the Urban Development Council of the Municipality, the requirement of normative distance from the building at 3 Abovyan St. and fire safety was violated. Besides as protest organizers believe, there will be need for parking lots and other infrastructures for hotel service on the spot of historical and cultural monuments after the construction of hotel complex.
As “Teghout Support” civic initiative member Arthur Grigoryan informed EcoLur, the ministry representative said that the ministry gave its consent to the construction of the hotel, as the site developed had promised to reinforce the AOKS building and the Ministry doesn’t oppose for the ministry to be built far and they may call upon the court in this regard.
“We demanded the construction to be stopped, destroyed and to ensure the proper distance,” Arthur Grigoryan said.
