The letter addressed to EcoLur by Human Rights Defender’s Office says that Human Rights Defender Karen Andreasyan took the problem of asbestos aqueduct in Litchq Village, Syunik Region, under his control (see the material by EcoLur http://ecolur.org/hy/news/sos/where-is-litchq-village-and-where-is-basel-convention/4369/). “A part of drinking water pipes in Litchq Village, Syunik Region, is made of asbestos, which endangers both people’s health and environment. In 2012 this problem was covered by the mass media: the Basel convention ratified by Armenia in 1999, recognizes asbestos as a toxic waste, which can cause cancer diseases. In this regard, the Human Rights Defender sent a letter to Syunik Region, Nature Protection Ministry and Health Ministry, and the State Committee on Water Industry.  In reply to the Ombudsman’s letter, Syunik Regional Governor Suren Khachatryan confirmed that a part of the drinking water pipes in Litchq Village, Syunik Region, is made of asbestos. He also added that the works on replacing the pipes are in progress, which will be accomplished in June 2013. The Ombudsman assures that he will keep this problem under his control,” the letter says.
