Nine-magnitude quake is not possible on the location spot of the Armenian nuclear power plant. On April 26 Vahram Petrosyan, Director of Research Institute of NPP Operation, made this statement at the press conference held at EcoLur Press Club. “The studies showed that the spot where the nuclear power plant is constructed has been selected very correctly, as it has a thick layer of basalt underground, which runs up to the Araks River. It can stand a part of the shakes during the shakes. Whether or not nine-magnitude quake is possible here proves that a nine-magnitude quake, as a matter of fact, is not possible due to the basalt layer located underground,” said Vahram Petrosyan replying to the other speaker of the press conference, nuclear energy expert Emil Sahakyan. It should be mentioned that Emil Sahakyan mentioned in his speech that seismic safety has always been a hazard to the nuclear power plant, “This is the issue, which shouldn’t be discussed, as it’s rather dangerous to play with nature. Here I should recall Academician Sakharov, who used to say what I’m citing now, “You should be a fool to construct a nuclear power plant in a place like Armenia,” Emil Sahakyan said. Vahram Petrosyan reminded the attendees that the ANPP was constructed after the quake in Spitak. But after 1995 it was re-launched taking into consideration the seismic field of the nuclear power plant, what’s the state of the reactor corpus and internal structures, what kind of diagnostic system the nuclear power plant is equipped with. “At that time I was the responsible secretary of the state committee in charge of the re-launching of the nuclear power plant. When the studies were summarized, we wanted the foreign specialists to evaluate the territory and they told us, either Armenians are very smart and they selected the right place or the God wanted this place to be selected a nuclear power plant to be constructed,” Vahram Petrosyan said.
