Armenia may find itself in the 90’s, when the forest was felled down massively because of increase in gas price, while the governmental bodies don’t possess funds to decrease risks.
Already now forest use for fuel purposes is an uncontrollable field in Armenia. If to pay attention the successive statements of governmental bodies, illegal forest felling reduced due to control strengthening. According to “State Center for Forest Monitoring” SNCO and “ArmForest” SNCO reports, the number of illegal felling for 2012 reduced as compared with that of 2011, 1860 and 3081, respectively. While according to ICARE (International Center for Agribusiness Research and Education), at least 240,00 cubic meters of forest is illegally felled down in Armenia. These studies find their confirmation in the same data provided by the police. For example, when 60 trucks loaded with wood were stopped in Tavush region with the help of police forces on the night of 6-7 November 2012. If to take into account that the trucks contained 25-30 cubic meters and that dozens of trucks contain wood not just one night but each night almost all year round, the scale of Armenian forest felling can be visible.
In 2007-2008 “ArmForest” SNCI stated about the decrease of forest felling and explained this with providing gas supply to villages. But what ArmForest will say when not only villages, but also towns will refuse from gas. The situation is escalated with cold and its alternative can be mass migration, which will result in having neither forests nor villages.
