Fires Caused Damage for 504 Million AMD to Armenian Forests

The forest fires in Armenia have multiplied. On May 29 the Armenian Government approved Republican program aimed to improve fire safety in forests and other vegetation-covered territories to reduce fire risks in green zones and to regulate this problem. As the program says if on average 7 forest fires were recorded from 2001 to 2011, the number of forest fires from 2010 to 2011 was over 50 per year. According to National Statistical Service, forestry enterprises incurred damage because of forest fires in the amount of 504 million AND from 20005 to 2010, out of which the damage for 2006 only was 500.2 million AMD. At the same time the expenses made for fire extinguishing made up 3368 million AMD.
The risk for fires increases in Armenia when the country territory is exposed to heatwave. The number of heatwaves as compared 1948-1980 with 1980-2012 has significantly increased, by 40%, which means that the republic will have summers with higher temperature background and fewer precipitations.
