We celebrate the World Day to combat desertification and drought on 17 June. The slogan for 2013 is “Don't Let Our Future Dry Up”. The world has been celebrating this day since 1995. Armenia joined the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in 1994 and ratified it in 1997. It has been acknowledged that 81% of the territory in Armenia is exposed to desertification. The measures the government offers include investing in contemporary technologies for sewage cleaning, implementing measures for Lake Sevan ecosystem recovery, to adhere to sanitary norms for water sources, to limit the use of mineral fertilizers, to carry out the monitoring of water resources and to expand sanitary zones.
Around 30,000 ha of agricultural land areas have gone out of use in Ararat Valley though their status hasn’t been changed.
