The undertaking with the used of Karabagh coal at Yerevan thermal power plant is not realizable and has no technical solutions and perspectives, Emil Sahakyan thinks, an expert in energy. We speak about widely advertized project of coal mining in Maravuz coal mine in Artsakh. In 2010 the supply of coal for Yerevan TPP was launched, which was not sued in any way. As Emil Sahakyan explains, the use of coal in gas- fuel oil boilers is impossible.
“The technology of burning coal is conditioned with the construction of boilers, and each type of the boiler is designed for certain type of fuel. Yerevan thermal power plants use gas-fuel oil boilers and they are designed for coal. The reconstruction of such boilers for the use of coal fuel will cost more expensive than the construction of a new coal boiler unit,” Sahakyan said. In reply to EcoLur’s question what to do with coal mining, Emil Sahakyan said, “It’s more expedient to aim the funds to be spent on the construction of a reserve unit for new Yerevan TPP. While the coal will be used in private enterprises and will replace fuel wood thus preventing tree felling,” Sahakyan said.
