Our colleague Sergey Naumov, a journalist from Uzbekistan, is currently in police custody. He has been arrested and the lawyers have no access to him. We have received an alarm signal from CEE Bankwatch Network, and its members express concerns that pressure may be exercised on the journalist, and even tortures in regard with the journalist’s professional activities. Sergey Naumov particularly deals with the issues of child’s labour in the cotton fields of Uzbekistan and the conditions of their living, violations of children’s rights etc.
Sergey Naumov has been charged with Article 183 of the Administrative Code of Uzbekistan Republic (disorderly conduct and breach of peace),presupposedly for assaulting a woman and insulting her. In court Sergey Naumov denied any assault and insulting and claimed he bumped into the woman in a dark alley.
Amnesty International is dealing with this issue. We are joining in the support of journalist Sergey Naumov and calling for the Uzbekistan authorities to grant an access for the barrister.
We would like to remind the Uzbekistan authorities about their commitment towards people in custody and the need to comply with the international provisions of human rights, including the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention against Tortures.
We are calling everybody concerned with the non-transparency of the society, pressure on the freedom of speech in Post-soviet countries to join the support of the journalists. Applications can be sent at the following addresses up to 6 October.
