Environmental Education as a Guarantee for a Sustainable Future

It is well - known that nowadays there are many environmental problems that face humankind, but the most important one is the protection of the Earth. Currently of particular importance is the raising awareness of people on global environmental issues, the formation of a new way of thinking about preserving our planet. The matter of preserving the Earth should become a lifestyle, a way of thinking for both young and old. The NGO “Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment” (AWHHE) is pursuing this goal through implementation of the project entitled “Development of Armenian environmental  education – for improved biodiversity”.

The project is currently implemented in the schools of Ararat, Kotayk, Vayots Dzor, Tavush and Gegharkunik regions of Armenia and aimed at implementing outdoor environmental education of schoolchildren. The project is being implemented together with the Es tonian “Peipsi Center for Transboundary Cooperation” organization supported by the Estonian Development Cooperation Fund.

On September 12, 2014, 14:00 p.m, at Ani Plaza Hotel, Nairi Hall (addre ss: Yerevan Sayat-Nova Ave. 19) AWHHE NGO is organizing an event, the purpose of which is to summarize the results  of project implementation and award the teachers and pupils of targeted schools who became the winners of the essay competition organized earlier during project implementation.

Seven essays, that became the winners of the essay competition, were implemented in Vayots Dzor, Kotayk and Gegharkunik regions of Armenia. For example, the 10 th grade student group of the secondary school of Gegharkunik community of Gegharkunik region implemented the  program entitled “Eco Stop” . In total 3 Eco Stops were constructed. The main goal of the program is to provide information on various environmental issues for the residents of the community. People can obtain information while waiting at a bus stop. This phenom enon is unprecedented and has received the approval of the villagers who have expressed their wish to have similar stops also in other parts of the village. Among the invitees are: representatives of the Ministry of Nature Protection of Armenia, National Institute of Education, international organizations, guests from abroad, teachers and students from regional schools, and media representatives.
