The residents of Kurtan settlement in Gyulagarak enlarged community in Lori Region have started collecting signatures against the project of building a new SHPP on Dzoraget. As of November 16, 2021, 400 residents joined the petition, demanding that Khachik Vardanyan, Acting Head of Gyulagarak enlarged community, submit a negative opinion on the Loriberd SHPP construction project by Lori Fortress LLC.
"We, the residents of Kurtan settlement of Gyulagarak enlarged community in Lori Region of the Republic of Armenia, are against the construction of a HPP on Dzoraget by "Lori Fortress" LLC.
We demand that the local -government bodies of the enlarged community of Gyulagarak protect the legal interests and rights of all the residents of the community, including the residents of Kurtan, and suspend the process in accordance with the law, presenting a negative conclusion to the HPP project submitted by Lori Fortress LLC on the Dzoraget River,” this is what the letter attached to the signatures says.
Based on the residents' opinion, the reasons given in the joint statement by "EcoLur" and " Center for Community Mobilization and Support" NGOs to reject the SHPP construction, as well as the incomplete responses given by "Lori Fortress" LLC to the questions about the damages and risks of SHPP construction during the public hearing held in Kurtan on November 8, Gyulagarak Municipality submitted a negative opinion on the planned activities.
