Solar Energy Development Launched in Aragatsotn Region

“Energy SGA” Company submitted to Environment Ministry the environmental impact assessment report of 4.81 MW solar photovoltaic station in Katnaghbyur Community in Aragatsotn Region. The last, fourth public hearing of the document is scheduled for November 30 at 10:30 in the building of Talin community hall, at 11:30 in the building of Katnaghbyur community hall on the same day.

$ 3.3 million will be invested in the construction of the plant, the service life is 25 years. Under the project, the station will occupy an area of4.25 hectares. It mentions that "the chosen land has no non-agricultural value or any other serious value."

It is planned to install about 10,750 solar panels. The total volume of the panels will be 860 m3. Hazardous waste from panels, which is considered to be the most vulnerable part of solar energy in the world, does not offer a clear management plan, but outlines possible options.

"In the Republic of Armenia, as well as in the developed countries of the world, there are still no solutions for solar power plant equipment, in particular panels containing photo elements and other accompanying parts as waste.

The company plans to use the following options:

- If possible, repair and re-use damaged parts,

- Do not bury or collect panels containing photocells in open landfills,

- sell to other waste collection organizations, including developed foreign countries, which have such expired waste recycling technologies;

- dispose of waste containing photocells to points or organizations collecting electrical and electronic equipment for the purpose of collecting waste organized abroad,

- hand over the waste to the organizations of the countries that are engaged in the production of solar panels, from which the photoelectronic solar panels have been obtained.”

It should be reminded that recently RA Environment Ministry issued a positive conclusion to the environmental impact assessment report of the construction of another 5 MW solar photovoltaic power plant in Talin Community in Aragatsotn Region. The issue of waste management was not clarified here either. Dizapayt LLC offered the same waste management options as it appears in its application submitted by “Energy SGA”.
