The results of the drilling works launched in Qarqar section in Syunik Region in July for the purpose of constructing a geothermal station are satisfactory.

“The first results received from the depth of 1,500 meters live up to our expectations. The drilling of the second borehole will be launched in future,” RA Energy and Natural Resources Ministry informs. It’s planned to drill three boreholes in the frames of this project implemented with grant funds of US $9 million by Climate Investment Fund and co-funding of US $2 million provided by the Armenian Government. The final assessment of the geothermal resource in this area will be given based on the received results.

“The results we obtained from the first borehole enable us to say that a geothermal station will be constructed in Qarqar. It’s planned to have 30 megawatt capacity and produce annually from 250 million kW electricity,” the ministry press release says.

The construction of the geothermal station is assessed around US $ 100 million.
