Dzoraget village having a population of 265 people was founded in 1924 based on Tumanyan station. The village consists of two residential areas, one located in a distance of 2 km from the other. The Pambak River flows in one part, while the Dzoraget River flows in the other part, which a SHPP has been constructed on. The SHPP doesn’t create problems with irrigation, as the village doesn’t have agricultural land areas and pastures. People don’t deal with cattle breeding here either. According to the locals, most of the village is employed at the SHPP and the hotel on the river bank.
“The SHPP has been operating since 1932: it has operated and given production, most people in the village work there. People work well and get paid well and can support their families. We are pleased with the SHPP, it did nothing but good to the people,” Dzoraget villager said.
The villagers pointed out that they use the Dzoraget River for swimming and fishing. They are content with the sanitary state of the river. The villagers used to throw away household garbage into the river, but now the rural municipality has installed garbage bins and this problem is solved. The streets of the villages are rather in a poor state, the windows of the buildings are broken and doors are broken off.
In reply to the question whether the SHPP provides social support to the village, the Dzoraget Villager said, “No, what they should do, they deal with their production and employees. Maybe they pay some money for the area they occupy to the community. The most important thing is that there are community employees and the salary is not less than 100,000 AMD.”
The material has been prepared in the frames of “Support to the Reforms of SHPPs through a Dialogue between the Public and The Ministry of Nature Protection of the RA for the Purpose of River Ecosystem Use” project.
