Small hydropower puts a lot of pressure on rural areas, leaving villagers with almost no water during the irrigation season. This problem is acute in Verin Getashen settlement of Martuni consolidated community in Gegharkunik Region, Armenia where "Argitchi" SHPP operates.
The second video entitled "Community and Socio-Ecological Challenges" shot by "EcoLur" Informational NGO presents the socio-economic and environmental problems in Verin Getashen due to small hydropower. In the video, locals talk about the damage they have done and make suggestions for mitigating or resolving it.
Anahit Gevorgyan, President of Martuni Women's Community Council NGO, talks about the introduction of a social-ecological policy. Tigran Muradyan, the administrative representative of Verin Getashen settlement, refers to their futile attempts to get financial support from the company operating Argitchi SHPP and avoid the company's social responsibility.
“Social and Ecological Responsibility” project is carried out by the NGOs involved in "Social-Ecological Consortium” - “Center for Community Mobilization and Support”, “Martuni Women’s Community Council”, “New Horizons”, “EcoLur” and “Forests of Armenia” NGOs within the frameworks of The Data for Accountable and Transparent Action (DATA) project.
