March 21 is International Day of Forests: Forester's Day Also Celebrated Today.
Forests, their sustainable management and use of resources play a key role in combating climate change and promoting the prosperity and well-being of present and future generations. Forests also play an important role in the fight against poverty. Despite these invaluable environmental, economic, social and health benefits, global deforestation continues at an alarming rate.
Armenia is a sparsely-forested country. Officially, Armenia's forests accounted for 11.2 percent of the country in 1993. However, these areas have shrunk over the years. According to expert data, they make 6-8% nowadays. In Armenia, forests are cut down both as fuelwood and a building material.
It should be noted that for 2020, Environmental Protection and Mining Inspection Body has estimated the damage caused to forests at about 815 million AMD. During the three months of autumn 2021, the damage to forests amounted to about 342 million AMD from September 6 to November 26.
