Green Areas of Yerevan - Current Situation and Future Vision

A new report by Ecolur studied Yerevan’s Master Plan for 2024 in terms of its alignment with the targets of Green City Action Plan. The report was discussed with state bodies and civil society and published on the Ecolur website.

This publication will address issues of green spaces.

The main strategic goal of Yerevan's Green City Action Plan is to bring the ratio of open green spaces per capita to more than 10 sq.m. by 2030.

It should be noted that the minimum green space per capita value defined by the World Health Organization makes up 9 sq.m, while the optimal value is considered to be 50 sq.m.

According to the master plan for 2005-2020, this indicator was supposed to be brought to 17 sq.m. by expanding public green spaces by more than 1,300 hectares, as a result of which the total area should have been 2,382 hectares by 2020.

According to the new master plan, as of 2024, the ratio of open green spaces per capita in Yerevan is 8.3 sq.m. This indicator is close to to the short-term target set by Green City Action Plan (GCAP), according to which the green space per person should be increased to more than 8.5 square meters by 2022, and to more than 10 square meters by 2030. With the new master plan, Yerevan aims to achieve 10 square meters per capita through the implementation of various measures, which aligns with the strategic goal of the GCAP.

To achieve this figure, according to the master plan, the annual and five-year development programs of Yerevan City include the establishment of a new community park in the 230 hectares of Dalma Gardens. The establishment of protective forest zones is also planned in Nubarashen (8.5 ha), Silikyan neighborhood (7 ha), Nor Nork (from Water World to the Zoo - 12 ha), and Nork Marash (former Nork gardens - 10 ha). According to the new master plan, the latest data shows that the green spaces in Yerevan officially cover about 6760 hectares (2023), which is 30% of the city's total area. This figure is in accordance with the data from the World Health Organization.
