Meghri Residents Failed Public Hearings of Mining Project Submitted by Nig Mining

On 7 May Meghri community residents failed the public hearings of Taghamir gold mining project for 2018-2021 submitted by 'Nig Mining' LLC in Syunik Region.

The residents boycotted the public hearings shouting "Go Away", "We Are Owners of Our Country". They didn't allow the representatives of the company and RA Nature Protection Ministry to enter Meghri Regional Municipality building. The regional municipality representative summed up the opinion of Meghri residents, "I am stating the decision of the community administration: taking into consideration the discussion of the community head and the aldermen's council, as well as the active positioning of our residents in the mass media, I can state this public hearing is boycotted and won't be held."

Under the project, Taghamir gold mining project occupies 290 ha, it includes two sections from Litchq Village of Meghri Community in Syunik Region. Around 79 ha of the claimed area is located in Areviq National Park of Zangezour Biosphere Complex.

It should be mentioned that 'Nig Mining' LLC has been issued a positive opinion to carry out geological prospecting in Khdebantsi mining field for 2018-2020 in the area of 529.2 ha in the areas of Shvanidzor and Tsav Villages in Syunik Region. This mining field is adjacent to the area of Areviq National Park.
