The results of the research by Czech specialists on heavy metal contamination of food chain in Alaverdi and Akhtala communities will be announced in November 2019. This will make it possible to identify the link between human health and environmental pollution. The works are carried out in cooperation with “Community Mobilization and Support Center”, EcoLur and Czech “ARNICA” NGOs. Samples of soil, vegetables, fruits, vegetables and biomass were taken from the land. The work is being carried out within the frameworks of “Enhancement of the civil society in Alaverdi and Akhtala to solve industrial pollution problems” project. Project Coordinator, representative of “ARNICA” NGO Miroslava Jopkova said, "As part of research, we want to check whether heavy metals have penetrated into the food and, consequently, into the food chain. In the future, we can also investigate the impact of heavy metals on the health of local residents and analyze the impact. ”

Prague Chemical Institute specialists conducted sampling work in Alaverdi and Akhtala communities in Lori Region in July this year. The samples will be examined in the laboratory of the Prague State Institute of Veterinary Medicine, High School of Chemical Technology. The analysis will be performed on three levels of the food chain: soil, hair and vegetables and fruits.

“Community Mobilization and Support Center” NGO Chair Oleg Dulgaryan noted, “When we have data that there are heavy metals in the fruits and in the bodies of people using those fruits, we will force the state to recognize this fact and conduct a state-of-the-art human health assessment," Dulgaryan said. Oleg Dulgaryan recalled an incident when in 2013 the local peaches were allowed to export to the European market.
