Today in Tsovinar community of Gegharkunik Region of Armenia the application for geological exploration in Vardenis polymetallic mine was rejected and the hearing of Geomining LLC was boycotted. According to Martuni Infotun, the representatives of GeoMining LLC and the Ministry of Environment arrived in the community to hold public hearings, but locals did not allow the hearings to take place. A protocol was drawn up on the spot which reads: "A public hearing on mining in the administrative districts of the Tsovinar community did not take place because of the people's uproar and disagreement."
The gathered residents signed under the protocol, and the municipality signed it. The protocol was handed over to the representative of the Ministry of Environment.
According to the project, the company plans to search for gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead and molybdenum in 195 km2 (19 483.56 ha) mining site in the administrative areas of Yeghegis and Malishka in Vayots Dzor Region, Tsovinar, Artsvanist, Kartchaghbyur communities in Gegharkounik Region.
It should be noted that GeoMining also filed a request to search for metals in the Vardenis mining area in 2015 and 2017. The main shareholder of this company is the Canadian “Dundee Precious Metals” Company, which previously operated the Shahumyan gold-polymetallic mine in Syunik Region.
