The Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia has responded to the letter dated on 28 December 2019 addressed by the participants of the conference “Impact of Environmental Pollution on Health of Lori Region Residents” to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan.
The public urged the Prime Minister to set up an interdepartmental working group under the Government of the Republic of Armenia to develop a strategy for assessing the health of communities affected by mining and assessing the impact of mining on population health.
The reply letter from the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia states: "The Ministry of Health has developed a methodology for "Epidemiological Assessment of Environmental Health Risk Impact" submitted for the opinion of experts of the World Health Organization (WHO). The methodology is being supplemented and amended. Once approved, it will be possible to carry out an environmental impact assessment on human health in line with international approaches.
The Government of the Republic of Armenia and the World Bank have signed a contract with DMT GmbH & Co.KG and the Finnish Geographical Survey Joint Undertaking to provide technical assistance for the diagnostic study of "Mining Sector Policy of Armenia, Environmental and Health Impact Assessment". Within the Diagnostic Study, a study will be conducted at two metal and two non-metal mines selected by international experts.
The Ministry of the Environment finds it more appropriate to involve the general public in the discussion of diagnostic studies, including participants "Impact of Polluted Environment on the Health of Lori Region Residents". Currently, EV Consulting is conducting a diagnostic study "Economic Analysis of Armenia's Soil Sector and its Impact on Sustainable Development", which is in its final stages. The results of the aforementioned diagnostic studies will serve as the basis for the development of the mining strategy."
