At the meeting held on 28 February, Vayq Community Aldermen’s Council, Vayots Dzor Region, gave its preliminary consent to the operation of Azatek gold-polymetallic mine, despite the petition submitted by the residents to ban metal mining in Vayk.

Vayq Community Aldermen’s Council has 11 members, out of which 7 participated in the meeting. Only Mary Janoyan out of the council members voted against the project.

Vayq InfoHouse mentions: “In fact, the petition signed already signed by 500 Vayq residents, banning mining in the community has been rejected. This decision was made by the council regardless of the struggle of the community residents.”

Reminder: The petition to ban metal mining in Vayq commenced last year when Vayq residents rejected e Azatek gold mining project. The mine was then claimed to be operated by Vayq Gold LLC. Now the mine wants to operate the recently established Vayq-Invest LLC.
