Akhtala OPC intends to increase the dam of "Nahatak" tailing dump by 40 to 80 cm. On April 18 2020, a trilateral meeting was held with the participation of "Akhtala Mining Ore Processing Plant" CJSC, representatives of local self-government and residents of Mets Ayrum settlement.
Oleg Dulgaryan, President of Community Mobilization and Support Center NGO, told EcoLur.
"They presented a project for the approval of the residents of the community to increase the dam of "Nahatak" tailing dump by 40 to 80 cm. Meanwhile, it turned out that there is no project yet, there are preliminary schemes, which must be submitted for examination, then EIA and later reclaiming. Meanwhile, according to the company project submitted in 2017, the tailing dump should have been reclaimed in March 2020. There are many documentary, legal and non-compliance issues here," Oleg Dulgaryan said.
According to Oleg Dulgaryan, the residents, realizing that the further operation of the tailing dump will be without a project and at the expense of their health, demanded compensation for each resident in the amount of 30,000-50,000 AMD per month until the tailing dump is reclaimed. The representatives of the company did not respond to the demand of the villagers for compensation. "People need to have a guarantee that the problem will be solved," he said.
