"Akhtala Ore Processing Plant" CJSC is currently increasing the dam of "Nahatak" tailing dump in Mets Ayrum Village. Meanwhile, the company does not have permission to carry out such works. Moreover, the company should not have been working on raising the dam these days, but on reclaiming the tailing dump.
Thus, the report on the environmental impact assessment of the tails storage project in the extracted area of the Akhtala ore processing plant was issued on 14.11.2017 by RA Ministry of Nature Protection. According to the expert opinion no BP 100, the first stage of the reclamation of the Nahatak tailing dump should have started in October 2018.
According to Oleg Dulgaryan, President of Community Mobilization and Support Center NGO, the work has resumed, and the observation tower has been raised by several dozens of centimeters in order to raise the dam.
"Work is being done there without any project. The residents do not go out anymore, they are tired, they do not believe that anyone will help them. They are waiting for the decision of the state. The residents agree that they must fight, but the plant is putting social pressure on them. They say the factory will be closed and you will be guilty. And it has its impact," he said.
Oleg Dulgaryan is convinced that social blackmail should not affect the local self-government bodies and the inspection body. "However, the local authorities and the inspection take no actions. That is why we have applied to the Armenian government to help set up a working group to resolve the issue, which should deal with cleaning the community from wastes,” Oleg Dulgaryan said.
