Municipality Considering Option of Greening Areas of Derelict Mines in Yerevan

Yerevan Municipality wants to green the derelict mines in Yerevan that are no longer in use. There are 11 of them.

At the beginning of July, Yerevan Mayor Hrachya Sargsyan, during his working visit to Paris, reached an agreement with Valérie Pécresse, President of the Regional Council of Île-de-France, on the project of greening and jointly transforming the areas of closed mines in Yerevan. RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures does not consider it appropriate to green mines, because there are outstanding reserves in the mines.

Atmospheric air pollution with dust in Yerevan has increased over the last 5 years. Sources of dust are not only construction sites, construction waste, degraded lands, but also non-metallic open mines and derelict mines operated in Yerevan. While in the case of operating mines or construction there are those responsible for measures to prevent or reduce dust emissions, in the case of abandoned mines there is no one responsible. We consider it necessary for the responsible bodies to take measures for the rehabilitation of abandoned mine sites, which will significantly reduce dust emissions into the atmosphere.
