OUT OF 113 LANDFILLS ONLY ONE MEETING “SET STANDARDS”

Larisa Paremouzyan, the Hetq

Interview with Lori Region Head Aram Qocharyan

The four-year-long plan for Lori Region development for 2010-2013 foresees development of mining, metallurgical and chemical industry. How are we going to solve the accumulated environmental and upcoming problems?

Alaverdi Copper Smelting Factory, Akhtala “Metal Prince” Corporation, “Armanis” mine to be developed in near future, “Teghout” CJSC, “Vanadzor-ChemProm”,  Mghart Gold Mine belonging to “Multi Group” cause environmental problems in the region. “In the program we take into consideration these companies’ measures alleviating environmental hazards.”

Akhtala tailing dumps, Alaverdi arsenic cemetery, Mghart tailing dumps and 300 million-ton capacity tailing dump being constructed near Teghout Mine are also worrying. Armanis mine development foresees new technologies, there will be no dump here so as to classify probable wastes and transport to the company territory in the form of brackets.

How many landfills in region, out of 113, comply with the sanitary and hygienic standards?

To sum up, maybe one.
