Kaputan community residents, Kotayk Region, have launched a signature collection against the development of Abovyan iron mine, as Pan-Armenian Environmental Front Member Levon Galstyan told EcoLur and added that 300 signatures have already been collected. The company having bided for the mine development, “Spice Steel” LLC, is owned by Vardan Ayvazyan’s son, Chairman of RA Standing Committee on Economy and RPA Member Tigran Arzakantzyan.

It should be mentioned that according to hydrogeologist Ruben Yadoyan the iron in Hrazdan mine is on surface, while in case of Abovyan the mine is located underneath the waters, “Our drinking water will get worse when they get to their mine,” Yadoyan said in one of the interviews given to EcoLur. In case of Abovyan (Kaputan) iron mine development the Mayakovski group will become useless, while Yerevan gets 25% of its drinking water supplies from these sources.
