In 2014-2015 because of 13 accidents in Zangezour Copper and Molybdenum Combine tailing pipe the tails filled into Syunik community, said Syunik Community Head Samvel Sargsyan told EcoLur. “If there accidents in the tailing pipe, Syunik community is the first to suffer damage. The water flowing out of the tailing pipe is polluted with sulphuric remainders. Animals make use of this water. Our children fish in the river without realizing that it can’ be used. People get sick and don’t realize they suffer with diseases,” Samvel Sargsyan said. The Atchanan River, which flows through the community area and where ZCMC tails are dumped, flows 11 km through the village and flows into the Voghji River.
For the expansion of the tailing dump owned by “Zangezour Copper and Molybdenum Combine” CJSC the Armenian Government recognized eminent domain over 491.8093 ha within the administrative boundaries of Artsvanik, Sevaqar, Atchanan, Chapni and Syunik communities on 21 May. “They took 53 ha area from our community, besides, the combine has taken 6 ha land under their control without informing us. I can’t even prove with a map that area belongs to us,” Syunik Community Head said.
Samvel Sargsyan said that the combine administration doesn’t compensate the community damage caused with the accidents.
