The ecologists continue to express their anger and negative opinion of Meghrasar gold opencast mining project. "AT Metals" Armenian-Russian joint enterprise Ltd wants to exploit the mine. Now Meghrasar project is under environmental examination. Arsen Gasparyan, head of "Young Biologists Association", published his opinion in Facebook social site about the impact of Meghrasar mine on "Arevik" national park.
The creation of "Arevik" national park is aimed at retaining the habitats of rare, endemic RA red-listed plant species and the migration directions of animal species. In the ecological section of the suggested Meghrasar gold opencast mining project the opininons on specially protected areas of nature near the mine are not included, the impact, risks aren't assessed, the information about biodiversity is incomplete and so on. And the fact that this land is partially in the suggested territory of "Arevik" national park, and the rest part is in the buffer zone, shows the inadmission to exploit the mine. The approved charter of the national park in the buffer zone doesn't allow such an activity which will damage the habitats of flora and fauna and the stability of ecosystems, which is inevitable in case of opencast mine exploitation by means of explosion. The national park is included in Zangezur biospheric complex and for the development of nearby communities grant programs are realized by the support of German bank KFW. "The exploitation of this mine is against the environmental activities being realized and the strategy of stable development", Arsen Gasparyan has written.
