480 Million USD To Be Required for Nuclear Energy Development by 2036 in Armenia
The Armenian government has set a deadline of 2035 for the construction of a new power unit at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, as it is mentioned in "Strategic Program for Development of Energy Sector of the Republic of Armenia (until 2040)", which was approved by the executive at meeting held on 14 January, 2021. The financial sources for the construction of the new power unit of the ANPP have not been specified.

The government intends to operate the second power unit of ANPP by 2036, if the extension of its safe operation is justified. Currently, the term of operation of the second power unit of ANPP has been extended from 2016 to 2026. For the modernization of the second power unit of ANPP, the Armenian government has received a loan of $ 270 million from the Russian Federation, a grant of $ 30 million, out of which, as of 2020, $ 189 million has spent. A decision was reached by RA government that the rest of the amount, 63.2 billion AMD, will be invested from the RA state budget.

According to forecasts, an additional $ 150 million will be required to extend the life of the second power unit of ANPP until 2036.

Thus, according to "Strategic Program for Development of Energy Sector of the Republic of Armenia (until 2040)", $ 480 million will be required to extend the term of operation of the second power unit of ANPP in Armenia until 2036, out of which $ 170 million has already been spent from the Russian loan.
