On January 22, RA Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Suren Papikyan and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin visited the Armenian NPP to get acquainted with the process of modernization of the plant.
Currently, the ANPP is preparing for the final stage of modernization. The firing system has been installed on the reactor body of the NPP, which has undergone all the relevant tests and is fully operational. The actual firing process will take place this year, which will allow the plant to continue operating after 2026, as the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure.
RA Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Suren Papikyan reminded that at the beginning of the year the RA Government approved the strategic program for energy development until 2040. "The document states that one of the main priorities for the development of Armenia's nuclear sector is the extension of the term of operation of the second power unit of the Armenian NPP after 2026. The government intends to extend the operation of the plant at least until 2036. "At the same time, the main goal of the development strategy is to build a new nuclear power plant," he said.
Commenting on the development of cooperation between the countries in the energy sector, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin noted that nuclear energy remains a really strategic direction for the development of our bilateral cooperation. A huge amount of work has been done during the last three years, which became possible due to the professionalism of Armenian-Russian specialists, their ability to work in a systematic, complete dedication.
However, the front of the works remains quite wide and 2021 must be decisive on the way to achieve the final result. The general contractor for the works carried out at the ANPP is "Rusatom Service" JSC.
