Expert Discussion on “Challenges and Prospects of Nuclear Energy in Armenia” Held at “EcoLur” Press Club

On March 12, 2026, an expert discussion titled “Challenges and Prospects of Nuclear Energy in Armenia” was held at “EcoLur” Informational NGO.

The discussion was attended by representatives of RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, “Hayatom” Research Institute, research institutions, UNDP, civil society organizations, and experts.

Opening the discussion, Inga Zarafyan, President of “EcoLur” Informational NGO, addressed the participants. She noted that the escalation of geopolitical conflicts and the reassessment of internal strategies in the oil and gas sector have led to a strengthening of nuclear energy’s position in Europe’s energy balance.

During a conference on nuclear energy held in Paris on March 10, 2026, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen expressed regret over the decline in the share of nuclear energy in Europe’s energy balance and announced the goal of introducing small modular reactors (SMRs) across the European Union by 2030, as well as harmonizing the legal frameworks of member states.

“The aim of our discussion is to hear the views of specialists regarding the nuclear energy sector. We want the voice of energy professionals to be heard; experts must have their say,” Inga Zarafyan noted.

Expert Ara Marjanyan then delivered a presentation on the key issues of nuclear energy.

This was followed by a presentation by Vahram Petrosyan, Director General of the “Hayatom” Research Institute and Chairman of the Board of Directors of “Armenian Nuclear Power Plant” CJSC, titled “On the State of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant.” The presentations were followed by remarks and questions from the participants.
