From April 1, the operation of Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant has been suspended for scheduled maintenance. The planned works will last for 5 months. During this period, it is planned to compensate for the electricity generation gap in the energy system through solar power generation.
“If we take into account that in 2026, due to the lifetime extension program, Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant has been taken out of operation for 5 months starting from April 1, it is highly likely that in 2026 our solar power plants will generate as much electricity Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant,” RA Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan during the Government session on April 2 noted.
Earlier, in March, Minister Khudatyan had stated in a Facebook livestream that 14% of the electricity produced in Armenia in 2025 came from solar power plants.
“More than 1,150 MW of installed solar capacity is currently connected to Armenia’s energy system. This exceeds the target set for 2030 by about 150 MW, and this figure continues to grow,” he noted.
