It is planned to build five new solar stations in the territory of Herher and Azatek settlements in Jermuk Community in Vayots Dzor Region, Armenia. Preliminary environmental impact assessment applications of five companies have already been submitted to RA Ministry of Environment. Solar stations want to build "Sun Solar" LLC, "Dustr Solar" LLC, "Arm Solar" LLC, "I Solar" LLC and "EDM Solar" LLC, which are interconnected with each other. The activities of the first 4 companies are the same. They will jointly build solar stations in the administrative area of Herher settlement.
The first is "Arm Solar" LLC, which plans to build a 5 MW solar power plant with 10280 polycrystalline photovoltaic panels with a maximum power of 535 W each on plots 8 and 9 of the Varvats Mountain in Herher settlement. The station will cover 5.64 hectares.
The second is "Dustr Solar" LLC, it plans to build a 5 MW solar power plant with an installed capacity of 9828 multicrystalline photovoltaic panels, each with a maximum power of 535 W, on plots 12, 13, 15 of Varvats Mountain in Herher settlement. The station will occupy an area of 5.06 hectares.
The third is "Solar" LLC, which plans to build a 5 MW solar power station with an installed capacity of 10,400 multicrystalline photovoltaic panels, each with a maximum power of 535 W, on plots 16, 17, 18 and 19 of Varvats Mountain in Herher settlement. The station will occupy an area of 5.11 hectares.
Fourth, “Sun Solar” LLC plans to build a 5-megawatt solar power plant on plot 16 of Varvats Mountain in Herher settlement with 10,166 multi-crystal photovoltaic panels, each with a maximum power of 535 watts. The station will cover 5.4 hectares.
According to the submitted projects of all 4 companies, the category of agricultural lands intended for the construction of stations has already been changed to that of energy lands. The distance of the stations is 2520 m from Herher village, 4280 m from Arin village, the power line of the stations will have 170 pillars. Photovoltaic modules with 20.6% OGA production of JA SOLAR brand were selected. The power line will run from Herher through Arin community to Malishka community, where it will enter the substation.
The fifth "EDM Solar" LLC together with "Et Solar" LLC plans to build a 5 MW solar power station in the territory of Azatek village with 10400 multi-crystal photovoltaic panels with a maximum power of 535 W each. The station will cover 4.5 hectares. The distance of the station is 700 m from Azatek village. The power line of the solar station will have 25 pillars.
There are three natural monuments near the studied areas: "Azatek" fossil flora, "Tsitskar" rock peak, "Anonymous" fresco monuments. According to the submitted projects, the surveyed sites do not have direct borders with SPANs.
"Jermuk Hydrological" State Reserve is more than 15 km away from Herher site, "Jermuk Forest" State Reserve is more than 10 km away, "Herher Sparse Forest" State Reserve is more than 5 km away, more than 15 km away "Yeghegis" state reserve. According to the project, the territories are also not included in the "Emerald" network protected by the Bern Convention.
It is noted that there will be some impact on biodiversity during the construction phase due to land works, which will be short-term.
Under the projects, the generated waste is not large, the site will be fenced. As mentioned, a small amount of hazardous waste - residual oil, used tires, general construction waste - will be stored in the area of the station. The jammed panels formed during the operation will be stored at the waste storage site, after which they will be handed over to the licensed company, which will carry out their further transfer and management.
It should be noted that the submitted projects do not contain information on how much space the waste sites will occupy. It does not specify the name of the organization that will be involved in waste transportation and management. There is no information on how much damage will be done to land resources after the construction of solar panels, how much waste will be accumulated from these panels years later, when they will expire. There are no environmental management measures for these risks.
